An aspiring young writer crosses paths with Joe Goldberg, a bookstore manager and the two become fond of each other. The seemingly sweet Joe later turns out to be a complete psychopath but will this revelation come to Becky in time? This series tries to bring out or emphasize on the thin line between love and psychosis. I have seen movies and series that portray some boyfriends as sick and twisted but this is by far the highest level of insanity i have ever seen i mean the stealing, lying, stalking , manipulation and killings by only one person (Joe) is totally shocking. In the midst of watching all this I can't forget how agonizing it was for me to watch Becky in the dark while the rest of us viewers already knew Joe's true nature. I'm not sure if it's a series you can actually enjoy but what keeps you glued to this series is the extent of Joe's craziness. I can't even tell if i loved this series or not but the funny thing is i binge watched the entire season one. Joe's personality lures one into watching the entire season because even though his actions are painful to watch, he plays his psycho role too well and one just has to see how it all ends.
I applaud the excellent performance by Joe (Penn Badgley) considering the last time i saw him on TV was on gossip girl playing a totally different character and now it's hard for me to picture him as a normal person again because his role as Joe really stuck in my head. Other interesting faces include Shay Mitchell from Pretty little liars though unfortunately she won't be in the second season. I appreciate the social lessons behind YOU TV series especially when it comes to dating and relationships. These lessons are put across in this series especially as a message to women. While we can rely on labels associated with a person as a measure for one's personality one can clearly see in this series that Joe who seemed like a nice bookstore manager was totally something else. Rushing into a relationship backfired for Becky who thought she had met the nicest guy compared to the jerk of a boyfriend she had but in this case the saying " The devil you know is better than the angel you don't know " is definitely the tune that plays throughout the entire show so if you haven't watched this must-watch then please do so, you won't regret it.
